ELIXIR Core Data Resources feature strongly in first selection of Global Core Biodata Resources

The Global Biodata Coalition has announced the first set of Global Core Biodata Resources (GCBRs). The list comprises 37 resources whose long term funding and sustainability is critical to life science and biomedical research worldwide.  ELIXIR Core Data Resources (CDRs) make up 12 of the 37 resources, showing the impact of European data resources on global scientific research (Table 1).

GCBRs represent key elements within the global life science data infrastructure and their failure would significantly hinder research in the life sciences. The list was drawn up after a rigorous two-stage process by a panel of more than 50 independent experts, building on the selection process used by ELIXIR for its Core Data Resources.

The GBC’s partner funders will now explore suitable funding models to ensure the selected biodata resources have the greatest opportunity of being sustained over the long-term.  ELIXIR supports this process and remains committed to actively promoting and supporting the long term sustainability of fundamental European research data resources. ELIXIR and GBC will also work to further align selection and monitoring processes between the two organisations.
