ELIXIR Portugal is a consortium of four Portuguese research institutions which are part of the national biological information network, BioData.pt. Like ELIXIR itself, the Portuguese Node is organized as a decentralized network of specialized centres, under a common hardware and software infrastructure, and with shared training and industry/entrepreneurship programmes.
The main focus of ELIXIR Portugal is the Woody Plants domain.
Woody plants are a major natural resource in Europe, with a huge ecological and economical impact, supporting millions of jobs across diverse industries (e.g., wine, fruit, olive oil, coffee, paper, timber, cork) and strongly contributing to the European GDP. In Portugal, woody plants represent 10% of the GDP and are a central research domain in both academia and industry. Elixir Portugal aims to provide data, tools, standards, and training in this domain and thus contribute to building an ELIXIR framework that is of added-value to all woody plant-based industries.
ELIXIR Portugal is also a major contributor to the ELIXIR network in terms of Training, as it is building upon the renowned Gulbenkian Training Programme in Bioinformatics to provide workshops and training courses of excellence in key topics for ELIXIR.
