ELIXIR releases 2023 Annual Report

ELIXIR has released its tenth Annual Report, summarising the achievements of the 22 Nodes in the final year of the 2019-2023 Scientific Programme.

These include a widening portfolio of services, the selection of new Core Data Resources and Recommended Interoperability Resources, and the creation of new expert groups in Research Data Management, Environmental Impact, Learning Paths and Professionalising Careers in Research Infrastructures.

During 2023, Austria and Romania joined ELIXIR as Observers, and ELIXIR was awarded coordination roles in two Horizon Europe projects: ELIXIR-STEERS and EOSC-ENTRUST. Seven new internal projects totalling €1.5 million were funded, with 50 projects running during the year.

In 2023, ELIXIR reached its tenth anniversary and celebrated a decade of unifying national bioinformatics efforts and managing major EU projects. Niklas Blomberg stepped down as Director at the beginning of December, with Andy Smith acting as Interim Director and Tim Hubbard accepting the position of new Director, starting in March 2024.

Looking forward, the report outlines the new Scientific Programme for 2024-2028, which defines ELIXIR’s goals for the next five years, building on past experiences to address future challenges in life sciences.
