Data Management Plans

ARCHIVED GROUP: no longer active.

Many funders now request a data management plan as part of a grant application, or as one of the deliverables of a project. ELIXIR harbors expertise on very diverse aspects of data management in the life sciences.

This working group focuses on activities that spread the expertise on data management in ELIXIR between nodes and that make this expertise available to life science researchers and their projects.

Goals
  • Identify existing resources for Data Management training
  • Make new materials for Data Management training
  • Advertise ELIXIR data management expertise to the research community
  • Help researchers get the most out of their data with the least risk
Current Activities

In the beginning the DMP working group has held two surveys within ELIXIR to find out about activities surrounding data management planning in the different nodes. These showed that there is a large difference between the nodes in the level of involvement with Data Management Planning. A few of the most involved groups are bringing together their expertise now to make this available to the rest of ELIXIR.

The Working group has currently found a home in the Training Platform for ELIXIR, and has received some funding from the ELIXIR hub to execute a few of the tasks:

  • We are identifying the needs for training on data management planning. Workshops will be planned to identify what training can be provided to data management professionals or people that want to become a data steward or data manager. Also we will be working on awareness of the benefits and the requirements of good data management planning in research projects (aimed at the researchers).
  • We will make an index of all ELIXIR expertise that plays a role in data management and that can be important in data management planning. Starting from a collection made in ELIXIR NL, and from a software platform that had been developed in ELIXIR CZ, we are assembling this information in an expertise portal for data management planning: the Data Stewardship Wizard. We have been, and will be organizing workshops inside ELIXIR to extend the expertise that is collected. We will also be collaborating with organisations outside of ELIXIR to align these efforts with existing data management planning portals. At BioHackathon 2019 we will be present to add questions on software stewardship and create DMP's following standard funder templates.
Deliverables
  • ELIXIR Data Stewardship Wizard (web tool)
  • Workshops to identify expertise in data management in ELIXIR and to incorporate this in the wizard
  • Training programme for life science researchers and data management specialists
Membership
Membership of this group is open to all people at ELIXIR nodes who are interested in providing data management planning services to life science researchers in their country.
