This week's highlights

The ELIXIR website content management system was updated last week. The website and intranet should look and feel the same, but please contact
webmaster@elixir-europe.org if you spot anything that isn't right.
If you add or edit pages on the website/intranet, then the interface is a bit different. Please find instructions for common tasks here, and contact Debbie van Wyk if you need further help.

Deep intronic ETFDH variants represent a recurrent pathogenic event in multiple Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency

An ELIXIR Italy paper

Multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is a rare inborn error of metabolism affecting fatty acid and amino acid oxidation with an incidence of 1 in 200,000 live births. In this report, the reserachers achieved a definitive molecular diagnosis in a newborn by combining whole-genome sequencing with RNA sequencing. The identified variant is the third mutation reported in this region, highlighting ETFDH intron 1 vulnerability. This study highlights the importance of incorporating RNA analysis into genome-wide testing to reveal the functional consequences of intronic mutations.

Neuropathological spectrum of anti-IgLON5 disease and stages of brainstem tau pathology: updated neuropathological research criteria of the disease-related tauopathy

An EJP RD paper

Anti-IgLON5 disease is a unique condition that bridges autoimmunity and neurodegeneration. In this study, the authors propose a simple staging system: stage 1 mild neurodegeneration without overt or only minimal tau pathology, stage 2 moderate neurodegeneration and mild/ moderate tauopathy and stage 3 prominent neurodegeneration and tau pathology. This staging intends to reflect a potential progression of tau pathology, supporting the current notion that tau accumulation is a secondary phenomenon related to the presence of anti-IgLON5 antibodies in the CNS.
