Biomedical research projects are becoming increasingly complex and require technological solutions that support all phases of the data lifecycle and application of the FAIR principles. The Berlin Institute of Health developed a flexible and cost-effective approach to building customised cloud platforms for supporting research projects. In this article, the authors present their approach and argue that building customised cloud platforms can offer multiple advantages over using multi-project platforms.

Purpose definition as a crucial step for determining the legal basis under the GDPR: implications for scientific research

In this article, the authors provide conceptual clarity around GDPR compliance with respect to one core aspect of the law: the determination and relevance of the purpose of personal data processing. To illustrate the practical necessity of purpose specification for GDPR compliance, the authors show how the proposed approach can enable controllers to meet compliance obligations, using the example of the overarching GDPR principle of lawfulness to highlight the relevance of purpose specification for the identification of a suitable legal basis.
