Application of orthology and network biology to infer gene functions in non-model plants

An ELIXIR Belgium paper

In non-model plant species, the functional annotation of the gene space is largely based on homology, with the assumption that genes with shared common ancestry have conserved functions. This paper discusses different resources that integrate plant gene function information. Different approaches that support the functional annotation of gene products, based on orthology or network biology, are described. While sequence-based tools to characterise the functional landscape in non-model species are maturing and becoming more readily available, easy-to-use network-based methods inferring plant gene functions are not as prevalent and have limited functionality.

Loss of ADAR1 protein induces changes in small RNA landscape in hepatocytes

An ELIXIR Czech Republic paper

To study the effect of ADAR1 function in hepatocytes, the researchers have created Huh7.5 ADAR1 KO cell lines. This research analysed translatome changes by using a method based on sequencing of separate polysome profile RNA fractions. The most prominent changes found include negatively affected transcription by RNA polymerase III and the deregulation of snoRNA and Y RNA levels. ADAR1 KO polysomes are enriched in mRNAs coding for proteins pivotal in a wide range of biological processes such as RNA localization and RNA processing, whereas the unbound fraction is enriched mainly in mRNAs coding for ribosomal proteins and translational factors.
