A BY-COVID paper
This study proposes a novel approach to studying severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus mutations through sequencing data comparison. Traditional consensus-based methods, which focus on the most common nucleotide at each position, might overlook or obscure the presence of low-frequency variants. Utilising simulated short reads from genomes with specified mutations, the researchers contrasted the genomic matrix approach with the consensus sequence method. In real-world tests using data from GISAID and NCBI-SRA, this approach demonstrated an increase in reliability by reducing the error margin. The genomic matrix approach offers a more accurate representation of the viral genomic diversity, thereby providing superior insights into virus evolution and epidemiology.

The bioinformatics landscape in environmental omics: Lessons from a national ELIXIR survey
An ELIXIR Greece paper
This paper presents a survey on a community of researchers studying the environment with omics approaches in ELIXIR Greece. Personal interviews followed by quantitative and qualitative analysis were employed to document interactions and practices of the community and to perform a gap analysis for the transition toward multiomics and systems biology. Environmental omics in Greece mostly concerns production of data, in large majority on microbes and non-model organisms. The survey highlighted the popularity and suitability of targeted hands-on training events, data quality and management issues as important elements for the transition to multiomics, and lack of knowledge and misconceptions regarding interoperability, metadata standards, and pre-registration.
