On 13 April, ELIXIR and ELIXIR Netherlands held an Innovation and SME Forum focusing on machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in health research with more than 60 participants from industry and academia.

A COVID-19 Data Platform pre-print
The COVID-19 pandemic has seen large-scale pathogen genomic sequencing efforts, becoming part of the toolbox for surveillance and epidemic research. The European COVID-19 Data Platform was launched to support data sharing and has resulted in the deposition of several million SARS-CoV-2 raw reads. As a component of the Platform, the SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs enabled the extension and set up of infrastructure that we intend to use more widely in the future for pathogen surveillance and pandemic preparedness.

Empowering the community with notebooks for bespoke microbiome analyses
A BioHackathon pre-print
MGnify's recently launched Notebook Server provides an online Jupyter Lab environment for users to explore programmatic access to MGnify's datasets using Python or R. This pre-print report several developments to the Notebook Server completed during the BioHackathon Europe 2022. The developments include establishing an instance of the notebooks on the Galaxy platform and adding new notebooks and Jupyter UI extensions enabling more users to perform downstream analysis tasks on MGnify's extensive metagenomics datasets.

New study unravels why partners often share similar traits

For the first time, the reasons for this are teased apart by Zoltn Kutalik and his team, using advanced statistical methods and large public datasets. The results have recently been published in the journal Nature Human Behavior.
