Developing a machine learning training school for ELIXIR (SEP 2025-02)

A new, hands-on machine learning (ML) training school will be set up under this Staff Exchange to respond to the growing demand for AI and ML skills across ELIXIR. Building on ongoing activities in the ELIXIR community, the organisers will design a coherent learning path introducing core ML concepts, deep learning and generative AI, and placing them in the context of existing reporting guidelines and regulatory frameworks, including the DOME recommendations and the EU AI Act. Trainers from several Nodes will align and extend their existing materials to create open and FAIR training resources. There will be a four-day ML school in France during May 2025, with around 30 participants expected from across ELIXIR Nodes. There will be an emphasis on practical work using real data – to help researchers understand both the opportunities and limitations of applying ML methods in life science research.

This Staff Exchange will also establish a template that can be reused and adapted by other Nodes in future, contributing to ELIXIR’s long-term training capacity in machine learning and broadening the network of trainers who are comfortable delivering courses in this rapidly evolving area.
