New co-leads for ELIXIR scientific priority areas

Following release of the ELIXIR Scientific Programme 2024-28, co-leads for two of the three scientific priority areas have been announced. The third priority, human data and translational research, is to be led by the ELIXIR Hub.

The three scientific priority areas are:

  • Cellular and molecular research
  • Biodiversity, food security and pathogens
  • Human data and translational research

Cellular and molecular research, a cornerstone of ELIXIR since 2013, receives formal recognition as a scientific priority in the 2024-28 Programme, and will be led by three co-leads from the ELIXIR Nodes. These are Fotis Psomopoulos from ELIXIR Greece, Silvio Tosatto from ELIXIR Italy and Patrick Aloy from ELIXIR Spain. Support will be provided from the ELIXIR Hub by Fabio Liberante (Coordinator) and Clare Garrard.

The combined area of biodiversity, food security and pathogens forms a new scientific priority by joining up related areas of existing expertise. The priority area will be led by Robert Waterhouse from ELIXIR Switzerland, Cyril Pommier from ELIXIR France and Tereza Manousaki from ELIXIR Greece. Katharina Heil (Coordinator) and Physilia Chua will provide support from the ELIXIR Hub.

Human data and translational research falls under the Human Genomics and Translational Data team at the ELIXIR Hub and is coordinated by Serena Scollen with support from Magda Chegkazi. A Human Data Communities Steering Group is currently being formed to support the ELIXIR strategy development and ensure alignment of external and internal projects as outlined in the new Programme.

We warmly welcome the new scientific priority area co-leads and look forward to working together to accelerate research in these areas.
