This short guide is for members of ELIXIR who post on social media in a personal capacity, there are separate guidelines for ELIXIR account managers

The social media landscape is constantly changing. While this guide centres on X and LinkedIn, its recommendations are broadly applicable to other platforms, with X-related advice being especially relevant for Bluesky users.

If you are affiliated with ELIXIR and active on X, please inform the Hub at info@elixir-europe.org to be added to the @ELIXIREurope – ELIXIR people – list.

Spreading the word

  • Mention your involvement with ELIXIR somewhere on your Twitter and LinkedIn profiles, preferably in a way that would link over to your Node’s Twitter and LinkedIn profiles or to the ELIXIR main account.
    • For LinkedIn, mention the Node (or the ELIXIR main LinkedIn account if your Node is not on LinkedIn) in your “Experience” section, “Organisations” section or in your headline if a position in ELIXIR or an ELIXIR Node is your primary one.
    • For X, include the handle (X account name preceded by @, i.e. @ELIXIREurope) of your Node or affiliated institute in the description. When relevant (e.g. ELIXIR Hub staff) link directly to the main ELIXIR account.
  • Share, like or comment on ELIXIR Hub/ELIXIR Node X and LinkedIn posts as you see them.
    • Users can choose to repost or repost with their thoughts on LinkedIn (or quote on X). The “repost with your thoughts” function allows the users to express their opinions on top of sharing content. If you choose to repost with your own thoughts, please make sure to include the link to the event or more information in the reposts.
  • When attending events or presentations relevant to ELIXIR, mention @ELIXIREurope or the relevant Node in your X or LinkedIn posts.
    • X is suitable for instant updates during the events (live-tweeting).
    • LinkedIn is good for summaries of highlight posts after the events.
  • Make use of relevant hashtags and mentions. See the LinkedIn and X hashtags for ELIXIR Social media and the X lists below.

Etiquette

  • Remember your connection to ELIXIR – share your personal views, but make sure it's clear you're not speaking on ELIXIR’s behalf.
  • Don’t share any ELIXIR internal documents or operational information. If you are not sure, ask at info@elixir-europe.org.
  • Think twice before you post. Although posts can be deleted, this only removes the post from your own stream. For example, tweets that have been retweeted will remain publicly visible.
  • If you post incorrect or misleading information, it’s better to admit the error and post a correction as quickly as possible.
  • Credit the work of others. When sharing work by someone else, include their names (or handles) in your posts.
  • Always respond to questions addressed to you. If you don’t know how to answer a particular question, feel free to contact us at info@elixir-europe.org. If you come across complaints about ELIXIR online, please let us know as well.
