ELIXIR support for life science projects

If you are planning or running a project that uses our Services or that involves our Nodes, then you can apply to receive our support for your project or application.

We offer four categories of support that acknowledge the different levels of involvement with ELIXIR. In all cases, your project will have a custom page on our website. This page includes a boilerplate that you can incorporate in your grant application and link to in your project website. You will also have the opportunity to influence the development of ELIXIR services.

ELIXIR already provides free access to high-quality bioinformatics services (see ELIXIR services). These include the key ELIXIR ‘Key Service Collections’ that are recommended by the European Research Council (ERC), many scientific journals and data management guidelines from other funders.

1 For projects that plan to use ELIXIR services

What you get

If you plan to use any of these services in your project or in a grant application, we can provide you with a a custom web page on the ELIXIR website that acknowledges your project with Category 1 support, as a user of ELIXIR Services. You can include this link in your grant application and your website to:

  • Demonstrate to your funders that you are committed to supporting Open Science, Open Data, FAIR and Open Source Software Principles, ELIXIR’s ELSI guidelines and the ELIXIR Equal Opportunities Strategy.
  • Demonstrate that you are making use of high-quality bioinformatics resources that are reviewed by 23 countries and have long term sustainability plans in place.
  • Disseminate your project within the ELIXIR members: over 200 Life Science research institutes and over 600 SMEs.

What you have to do

  • Fill in the application form. To fill in the form you will need a few details about your project (name, short summary, funding call) and the details of your institute (name, address).
  • Fill in a short survey annually, to give feedback on the ELIXIR services you use. This will help improve the services.

Who can apply

Anyone who coordinate a project or grant that makes use of ELIXIR Services.

Note: We strongly advise you to get in contact with your local ELIXIR Node as they are the best placed to assist you in selecting and making the most of the ELIXIR Services (see the Nodes list). Alternatively, you can contact info@elixir-europe.org.


2 For projects that include members of ELIXIR as partners.

What you get

As in Category 1 support, you get a custom web page on the ELIXIR website that acknowledges you as a user of ELIXIR services. You can include this link in your grant application or website. In addition, for Category 2 support you get:

  • The chance to extend current ELIXIR services to support your project needs
  • Access to consultancy services provided by ELIXIR Nodes
  • Support for implementing Data Management Plans
  • Support to make data FAIR
  • Service configuration (i.e. AAI, Federate EGA, Workflows)
  • The use of ELIXIR Compute services (at a cost)

What you have to do

  • Fill in the application form. To fill in the form you will need a few details about your project (name, short summary) and the details of your institute (name. address).
  • Fill in a short survey annually, to give feedback on the ELIXIR services you use. This will help improve the services.

Who can apply

Anyone who is coordinating a project or grant proposal that involves ELIXIR Node members.

3 For projects that are coordinated by an ELIXIR member

What you get

As in Category 1 support, you get a custom web page on the ELIXIR website. ELIXIR Nodes that are coordinating a collaboration or grants proposal will be acknowledged at a higher level than any other competing proposal that is not led by an ELIXIR Node.

  • Demonstrate to your funders that you are committed to supporting Open Science, Open Data, FAIR and Open Source Software Principles, ELIXIR’s ELSI guidelines and the ELIXIR Equal Opportunities Strategy.
  • Demonstrate that you are making use of high-quality bioinformatics resources that are reviewed by 23 countries and have long term sustainability plans in place.
  • Disseminate your project within the ELIXIR members: over 200 Life Science research institutes and over 600 SMEs.

4 For projects that include the ELIXIR Hub as a partner

What you get

At the proposal preparation stage

  • We provide you with a a custom web page on the ELIXIR website that strengthens your proposal because it shows commitment from the ELIXIR Hub.
  • Support in writing the proposal (e.g. we can review the ‘impact’ and ‘implementation’ sections) .
  • The Hub can facilitate connections between the project and the wider ELIXIR Scientific Programme and other ELIXIR grants.
  • You can have access to expertise from other ELIXIR Nodes via the Linked Third Party clause, without the need to increase the number of beneficiaries.

At the project execution

  • We enable you to use expertise from other ELIXIR Nodes, as and when required, via a Linked Third Party clause.
  • You have access to key ELIXIR events and channels:
    • Invitations to attend and present at the All Hands (e.g. poster, flash talk)
    • Join relevant Platform and/or Communities meetings or teleconferences.
  • Communication and dissemination pack for proposal and project execution;
    • Dissemination via ELIXIR Newsletters (Key Contributors' Update, Weekly Brief, Industry Newsletter)
    • Dissemination via ELIXIR social media accounts
  • Opportunity to partner in ELIXIR industry activities, for example, host an Innovation and SME event, support from Hub in finding industry partners
  • Take part in ELIXIR Project Management Network, thereby accessing the expertise of ELIXIR Project Management Unit.
  • Limited core funding could be used to anticipate the release of Platforms services that will benefit the community, the project and the infrastructure when:
    • aligned with Platform roadmaps
    • aligned with Community roadmaps
    • relevant to the project and
    • core funding is available.

Beyond the project lifetime

  • Obtain direct access to key data to demonstrate the long term value of ELIXIR to national, European and global funders. This increases the chances of more ELIXIR-relevant topics in a future call.
  • Increase the visibility of ELIXIR to funders.

  • Coordinators of proposals that could deliver a broad impact for ELIXIR
