Croatia becomes ELIXIR Observer

Croatia has joined ELIXIR as an Observer, following approval by the ELIXIR Board on 4 November 2025.

As an Observer, the Croatian bioinformatics community can strengthen its collaboration with other ELIXIR Nodes and continue the path towards full membership, expected within the coming years. ELIXIR is made up of 21 member countries and EMBL, with Cyprus, Austria and Romania currently holding Observer status.

The future ELIXIR Node in Croatia will be led by the Medical Faculty at the University of Zagreb and coordinated by Professor Fran Borovečki. The focus of the Node will be on human genomics and trustworthy AI and machine learning (ML), and it will encompass the University of Split, the University of Rijeka,  the University of Osijek and the Rudjer Boskovic Institute.

Tim Hubbard, ELIXIR Director, said: “We are delighted that Croatia has joined ELIXIR as an Observer and we look forward to building connections to support future membership and integration into the wider European infrastructure”.
