ELIXIR has launched an AI Ecosystem Focus Group bringing together Node experts to address growing challenges within the scientific artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) field, particularly the need for infrastructure harmonisation. The group follows on from the successful ML Focus Group, which pioneered standards for reporting ML studies through the DOME recommendations and registry.
The new group will coordinate efforts, address fragmentation and support the standardisation of AI/ML infrastructure, ultimately aiming to build a more impactful and reusable ecosystem for AI/ML research outputs across ELIXIR.
These aims will be achieved by:
- Capturing ELIXIR stakeholder requirements to support the creation of a unified ELIXIR AI strategy
- Creating task forces to address challenges such as interoperability, explainability, trust and AI-readiness of life science research infrastructures
- Promoting the adoption of AI/ML standards and related metadata solutions across ELIXIR infrastructure
The group will also ensure ELIXIR's AI ecosystem is aligned with European regulations such as the EU AI Act, and connect with broader initiatives including Research Data Alliance (RDA), the European AI Factories and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) amongst others.
Silvio Tosatto (ELIXIR Italy), Fotis Psomopoulos (ELIXIR Greece) and Peter Maccallum (ELIXIR Hub) will provide leadership, with support from David Lloyd (ELIXIR Hub).
Interested ELIXIR members are invited to subscribe to the Focus Group mailing list. Individuals who are not ELIXIR members but are part of ELIXIR’s strategic partner organisations can apply to the AI Focus Group leadership (contact: david.lloyd@elixir-europe.org).
