Visiting the Hub

The ELIXIR Hub is based on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus located 10 miles (16 km) south of Cambridge, by the village of Hinxton.

Travelling by car

From the South

  • Leave the M11 at junction 9 and take the A1301 towards Cambridge.
  • From the roundabout, take the first left (about 800m), following the sign to Hinxton.
  • You will come to a small roundabout. Take the first exit to the Genome Campus.
  • Pull in at the Security building, which is on your left just before the booths. You will be issued a badge and your host will be contacted.

From the North

  • Leave the M11 at junction 10. Take care not to miss junction 10! It's 25 miles to the next exit.
  • Travel a mile or so in the direction of Saffron Walden. You will come to a roundabout with a petrol station.
  • Take the third exit: A1301 towards Saffron Walden.
  • Pass the two turnings to the village of Hinxton, and take the next right, at a small roundabout, signposted Genome Campus.
  • Pull in at the Security building, which is on your left just before the booths. You will be issued a badge and your host will be contacted. 

Travelling by rail

Trains to our area leave London from Liverpool Street and King's Cross stations, and take about an hour. There is also a train service from Stansted airport.

To get to the campus from nearby train stations, be sure to arrange your taxi pick-up in advance (see the list of taxi companies below).

Travelling by air

  • The closest airport is London Stansted, which is a 30-minute drive from the Genome Campus.
  • London Stansted has regular connections from Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Asturias, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Lille and Munich.
  • If you fly into London Heathrow or Gatwick, allow at least 2 hours to reach Hinxton by road.
  • London City and London Luton are about one hour's drive.

Please register your arrival with the campus Security Reception at the Campus' main entrance. This is located on the left before the security barriers and gatehouse. Security staff will have details of all appointments with external visitors. You will be provided with a temporary pass for the duration of your visit, which you should return before you leave.

When attending an ELIXIR meetings, workshops or conference, please arrange your own accommodation unless you have been informed that it has been arranged for you.

Hinxton Hall, Wellcome Genome Campus

If you want to stay in Hinxton, we recommend using Hinxton Hall for accommodation. This is our on-site accommodation providing a high level of comfort (3*) with free wireless internet, set in lovely parkland surroundings. Book early, though, as space is limited.

Accommodation nearby

Hinxton is a very small village, with few amenities and infrequent public transport. We recommend staying in Hinxton only if you have your own transport or if you will be attending a meeting or workshop with all meals provided.

Accommodation in central Cambridge

Please note that there is no public transport from Cambridge to Hinxton. We advise that you check methods of payment in advance of your stay as some B&Bs may not accept credit cards.
